About Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL)

SPECPOL

The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) is the fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. Established to oversee the decolonization of territories following WWII, SPECPOL now addresses a wide range of different political issues including peacekeeping operations, outer space affairs, and atomic radiation. As one of the six main committees of the General Assembly, SPECPOL plays a crucial role in addressing contemporary political challenges and maintaining international peace and security.

Foreign Technological Interference and Its Threat to Political Self-Determination

SPECPOL's mandate has evolved significantly since its establishment, reflecting the changing nature of international relations and global challenges. Originally focused on decolonization, the committee now addresses a diverse range of topics, from the peaceful uses of outer space to the effects of atomic radiation. This evolution demonstrates the committee's adaptability and continued relevance in addressing pressing global issues.

The committee's work encompasses several key areas:

  • Peacekeeping operations and their effectiveness in maintaining international peace and security
  • Outer space affairs, including the peaceful uses of space and prevention of an arms race in space
  • Effects of atomic radiation and nuclear safety
  • Decolonization processes and support for non-self-governing territories
  • Special political missions and their role in conflict prevention and resolution
Special Political and Decolonization Committee

Delegates in SPECPOL must navigate complex political landscapes while working towards consensus on sensitive international issues. The committee's work requires careful consideration of historical contexts, current geopolitical realities, and future implications of proposed solutions. Through diplomatic dialogue and negotiation, delegates will address contemporary challenges while upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The committee's role in addressing both traditional and emerging political challenges makes it one of the most dynamic and relevant committees in the United Nations system. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage with critical issues affecting international peace and security while developing their diplomatic skills and understanding of global politics.

Meet the Dias

Sandro Wang
Sandro Wang
Chair
Entering his Grade 10 Year at Southpointe Academy, Sandro is extremely thrilled and honoured to serve as the chair for the Special Political and Decolonization Committee at SPAMUN 2025. Ever since his first ever MUN experience at SPAMUN 2 years ago, Sandro has become captivated by all the chaos, excitement, and passion that enfolds within the committee rooms. Over these past few years, from mustering up the courage to raise his placard and delivering speeches for the first time (even if they lasted 15 seconds long), he has learned to cherish the lessons and memories that follow the MUN experience. Beyond the committee room, he can be found spending a little bit too much time playing video games while also trying different restaurants across Vancouver with his sister. Sandro is looking forward to staffing for this committee while also getting to know all the delegates!
Allen Wang
Allen Wang
Director
Entering his junior year at Steveston-London Secondary School, Allen is beyond ecstatic to serve as the Director of the Special Political and Decolonization Committee at SPAMUN 2025. Allen began his Model United Nations journey in Grade 10 at SPAMUN 2024, where he confidently stood up and delivered a 30-second speech with more holes than a block of cheese. Since then, Allen has made many more hole-filled speeches, often recycling and overusing his extremely “funny” one-liner openings. When he’s not pulling all-nighters in his hotel room or traumatizing his roommates with DIY chemistry experiments, he can usually be heard echoing his post-committee catchphrase of: “I’m cooked.” Outside of the committee room, Allen can be found at the Olympic oval getting beat by his friends at basketball, or side questing around Vancouver. Allen wishes all delegates best of luck and looks forward to meeting everyone at SPAMUN 2025.
Zoe Lheritier
Zoe Lheritier
Assistant Director
As a grade 12 student from Jules verne nǝxwχwǝy̓ em, Zoe is grateful to be serving as the assistant director of SPECPOL at SPAMUN 2025. Ever since participating in her first conference at SPAMUN 2024, Zoe would never stop talking about the amazing debates and connections she made. Outside of the Model United Nation committee room, Zoe is balancing 10 school clubs at the same time, or advocating for indigenous rights. Overall Zoe hopes to create good memories and fun times with novice and experienced delegates at SPAMUN 2025!
