About League of Arab States (LAS)

LAS

The League of Arab States (LAS), founded in 1945, is a regional organization of Arab countries in and around North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and Arabia. Its primary focus is on fostering political, economic, and cultural cooperation among Arab countries, as well as resolving regional conflicts through diplomatic debates. The LAS serves as a crucial platform for Arab nations to coordinate their positions on regional and international issues.

Committee Topic

Cross-Border Human Trafficking

The LAS plays a vital role in addressing key regional challenges and opportunities:

  • Political cooperation and conflict resolution in the Arab world
  • Economic integration and development across Arab states
  • Cultural preservation and promotion of Arab heritage
  • Social development and human rights protection
  • Environmental protection and sustainable development

Through its various specialized agencies and committees, the LAS addresses a wide range of issues affecting the Arab world. The organization's work encompasses everything from economic development to cultural exchange, making it a comprehensive platform for regional cooperation.

League of Arab States

The LAS committee provides delegates with a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary issues affecting the Arab world. Through diplomatic dialogue and negotiation, delegates will address regional challenges while working to strengthen Arab unity and cooperation. The committee encourages delegates to explore sensitive and timely issues within the Arab region, often reflecting real-world tensions and forming strategic alliances.

Delegates in the LAS committee will need to consider several key factors in their deliberations:

  • Historical and cultural context of Arab unity
  • Current geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa
  • Economic interdependence and development opportunities
  • Social and cultural ties among Arab nations
  • Regional security challenges and opportunities for cooperation

Isabella Wu
Isabella Wu
Chair
Currently a 9th grader at Crofton House, Isabella is thrilled to be serving as the Chair of LAS at SPAMUN 2025. Since the beginning of her Model UN journey, she has quickly grown to love the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of debate, and the way every session opens up new perspectives and connections. Whether it's late-night resolution writing or making conversation during unmoderated caucuses, MUN has become one of Isabella’s favourite spaces to learn, laugh, and lead. Outside of MUN, you can find Isabella trying to perfect her matcha chiffon cake (still a work in progress), tuning her guitar for the third time, or mastering the art of procrastination via Instagram. She’s excited to welcome all the delegates in LAS and can’t wait for a weekend filled with thoughtful debate and great memories.
Eugene Sung
Eugene Sung
Director
Eugene is a Senior at Semiahmo Secondary who has been bestowed with the great honor of being the Director of the LAS committee at SPAMUN 2025. After joining his school’s MUN club in his sophomore year and attending his first ever conference at Horizons 2023 at the Belt and Road Initiative Committee (where he gave a total of 0 speeches), Eugene found MUN to be the perfect environment for presenting what would usually be his inner monologues that would keep him up at 12am. Every conference he has been to has awarded him with a lesson, and by becoming a part of the mysterious dais team that would strike fear into him every time he delegated, Eugene is optimistic that he will gain a deeper insight of the MUN ecosystem. Beyond the conference doors, Eugene loves reading literature while drinking matcha at his local coffee breweries and boba shops, all the while being serenaded by jazz fusion artists like Masayoshi Takanaka. It is Eugene’s most prominent hope that every single delegate, no matter if they are in LAS or not, will have the most fantastic experience of their MUN career (and mayhaps even in their life) at SPAMUN 2025.
William Rozmus
William Rozmus
Assistant Director
A Grade 10 student attending Southpointe Academy, William is delighted to be serving as the Assistant Director of the LAS at SPAMUN 2025. Since attending his first conference in Grade 8, he has developed a passion for the exhilarating debate and creative problem-solving that come with the Model UN experience, and hopes to bring these aspects to this year's SPAMUN committee. From memorable group dinners, to making new friends at delegate socials, some of William’s best memories have been made at MUN conferences. Outside of the committee room, William can be found building Lego, playing basketball, and going camping. William is eager to get to meet all of the delegates who will be joining LAS this year!
