About United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

UNSC

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the most powerful body of the United Nations, responsible for maintaining international peace and security. As one of the six principal organs of the UN, the Security Council has the authority to make binding decisions that member states are obligated to carry out under the UN Charter.

Committee Topic

Preventing the Militarization of Humanitarian Aid in Conflict zones

The UNSC consists of 15 member states, with five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. The permanent members hold veto power, which can block any substantive resolution, making consensus-building and diplomatic negotiation crucial aspects of the committee's work.

Key responsibilities of the UNSC include:

  • Maintaining international peace and security
  • Investigating disputes that might lead to international friction
  • Recommending methods of adjusting such disputes
  • Authorizing military action when necessary
  • Imposing sanctions and other measures to enforce its decisions
United Nations Security Council

In the UNSC committee, delegates will grapple with complex international crises, security threats, and peacekeeping operations. The committee's decisions can have far-reaching implications for global stability and international relations. Delegates must balance national interests with the collective responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.

Success in the UNSC requires delegates to consider several key factors:

  • Historical context of conflicts and disputes
  • Geopolitical implications of proposed solutions
  • International law and UN Charter principles
  • Humanitarian concerns and human rights
  • Economic and social consequences of decisions

Minh Dang Trang
Minh Dang Trang
Chair
Minh is a current IB diploma 11th grader at Abbotsford Senior Secondary, and is honoured to serve as Chair for UNSC in this year's iteration of SPAMUN. Initially, Minh joined the Abbotsford Senior MUN club two years ago to improve his public speaking skills, but, from the decriminalization of cannabis in UNODC to uniting the world as Katseye in crisis, he discovered a passion for the unique world of MUN. Outside of MUN, Minh is often spotted losing in rank very often in Identity V, to his dismay, and constantly thinking about all of the work he will not do tomorrow. Minh's ambition is to foster a memorable experience for all delegates and hopes to make SPAMUN as enjoyable as possible.
Alveera Wahi
Alveera Wahi
Director
As a senior at Semiahmoo Secondary, Alveera’s MUN journey began in grade 9 when a friend convinced her to try it out, and she never looked back. What started as a simple curiosity, quickly turned into a passion for debate, diplomacy, and the thrill of committee sessions. Now as the Director for UNSC at SPAMUN 2026 she’s excited to see delegates bring their best ideas forward and create discussions that leave an impact (and maybe witness some legendary diplomatic roasts along the way). Outside of MUN, Alveera can be found trying to keep up with the speed of Formula 1 at ungodly hours or taking extremely long walks. Always up for a good laugh and eager to connect with fellow delegates and staff, Alveera is looking forward to an exciting and memorable SPAMUN 2026!
Aimee Tong
Aimee Tong
Assistant Director
Going into 10th Grade for the 26-27 school year, Aimee is delighted to serve as Assistant Director for UNSC at SPAMUN 2026. She joined MUN for the first time in Grade 8 after deciding with friends, "This year I'll lock in" (before promptly quitting). She returned the following year, enchanted by aesthetic instagram posts and the promise of skipping math class. Since then, she’s been delighted to discover MUN offers far more: fast-paced debate, incredible speeches and friendships formed somewhere between serious diplomacy and signature committee chaos. From making "Friendship is Magic" references to panicking as her friend had a close encounter with a revolving door, MUN has been nothing short of a beautiful and hilariously entertaining experience. Outside the conference room, Aimee can be found reading absurd articles about niche history, dyeing her hair a questionable amount of times and binging every Sherlock Holmes adaptation available. Aimee hopes to make SPAMUN 2026 memorable for all and wishes everyone the best of luck!
