About Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC)

DISEC

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is a principal committee of the United Nations General Assembly focused on disarmament, non-proliferation, and measures to maintain international peace and security. DISEC examines weapons control, arms regulation, the impact of emerging military technologies, and confidence-building measures between states. The committee brings together delegates to negotiate legally and politically feasible approaches to global security challenges.

Committee Topic

Regulating Autonomous Weapons and Emerging Military Technologies

DISEC addresses a broad spectrum of security-related issues that influence international stability and state behavior. The committee considers both traditional arms control and contemporary challenges posed by technological advances.

  • Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and arms control treaties
  • Regulation of conventional weapons and small arms transfers
  • Implications of emerging military technologies (e.g., autonomous systems, AI)
  • Confidence-building measures, transparency, and verification mechanisms
  • Disarmament education and support for post-conflict disarmament programs

Delegates in DISEC will evaluate legal frameworks, technological constraints, and political considerations while negotiating resolutions that promote international security and reduce the risks of armed conflict.

Disarmament and International Security Committee

DISEC provides delegates with a forum to engage with global security challenges, build technical understanding of arms control, and negotiate pragmatic measures to reduce the risks of conflict. Delegates will balance political feasibility with legal and technical constraints while drafting comprehensive solutions.

Delegates in DISEC should consider several core factors when drafting and negotiating:

  • Technical and legal feasibility of arms control proposals
  • Verification, transparency, and enforcement mechanisms
  • State security concerns, strategic balances, and deterrence dynamics
  • Humanitarian impacts of weapons and conflict on civilians
  • International cooperation, treaty frameworks, and capacity-building

Renie Zhu
Renie Zhu
Chair
As a surviving senior at Steveston-London Secondary School, Renie is beyond excited to serve as the Chair of the Disarmament and International Security Committee at SPAMUN 2026. Since stumbling into her very first Model UN conference just over a year ago slightly confused but determined to survive her speeches, Renie has collected fair share of memorable GA moments, from scrambling to finish resolution clauses minutes before presenting, to debating wording that somehow becomes far more intense than expected, to celebrating when everything finally comes together, MUN has given her both memorable experiences and ever-lasting friendships. Outside of committee, Renie can be found napping, grinding at waves coffee house, playing sports, and spending time with her friends, somehow managing to be both productive and not at the same time. She looks forward to a weekend of live debate, strong collaboration, and memorable experiences!
Marie Harmsworth
Marie Harmsworth
Director
A suffering senior at Lord Byng Secondary School in Vancouver, Marie is elated to be serving as the director of the Disarmament and International Security Committee at SPAMUN 2026. Ever since being forced into her first committee session a long long time ago as an overly shy delegate, Marie has developed a passion for the vibrant debate, violent table banging, and chaotic crisis sessions found within the committee room. Over the years, she has become deeply SHOCKED AND APPALLED at the innumerable hours she has spent passing notes, obsessing over every MUN sticker, and cramming position papers. From scheming invasions for some random HCC delegates, to negotiating in French at 2am to partaking in an Inside Out mafia, Marie has cultivated a collection of fond memories from her time in MUN which she will cherish for years to come. Now as a certified MUN veteran, Marie sincerely hopes that every DISEC delegate at SPAMUN has an amazing committee room experience. Outside of the committee room, Marie can be found trying out new coffee shops, partaking in the randomest activities because why not, or fleeing Vancouver to explore new cities. Additionally, she also spends an unspeakable amount of time throwing frisbees in hopes of the “perfect throw."
Abigail Rozmus
Abigail Rozmus
Assistant Director
As a grade 9 student going into grade 10 at Southpointe Academy, Abigail Rozmus is extremely excited to take on the role of Assistant Director for DISEC at SPAMUN 2026. Abigail started her Model United Nations journey in grade 8 with SPAMUN being her first ever conference. From the minute her first session started she knew that this was the first of many conferences to come. Throughout the years Abigail has participated in several different committees, at each one learning more about the world along with herself. During all of these conferences she has had unforgettable experiences with so many new people and began to truly find her voice as a public speaker. Outside of MUN Abigail is a competitive dancer and a nature lover always looking for a new challenge, who can almost always be found at the dance studio.
